CaughtOnBlackVue: Insurance Scammer Backs Down After Seeing Rear Cam Footage

Parking lots can be a minefield. Between stray shopping carts and distracted drivers, it’s one of the most common places for minor accidents to occur. But what happens when an accident isn’t an accident at all, but a deliberate attempt to scam you?

In this week’s edition of #CaughtOnBlackVue, BlackVue user Anthony shares a video that proves the undeniable value of having eyes in the back of your head—or in this case, a BlackVue DR900X-2CH Plus looking out your rear windshield.

The Scene: A Routine Grocery Run

Anthony had just finished his shopping at a Kroger grocery store. It was a standard afternoon errand. He returned to his truck, backed out of his parking spot, and shifted into ‘Drive,’ preparing to navigate out of the lot.

That is when things took a turn.

Suddenly, a truck parked nearby threw it into reverse and backed directly into the rear of Anthony’s vehicle. The impact was significant enough to crush the other driver’s bumper, though Anthony’s truck thankfully sustained no major damage.

The Confrontation

In a typical scenario without a dash cam, this situation is a nightmare. It becomes a classic “he said, she said” argument. Since the other driver was reversing, they could easily claim that Anthony was the one who backed into them, potentially making Anthony liable for the damages.

As it turns out, this wasn’t just bad driving. Anthony later discovered that this driver had a history of staging accidents just like this one to file fraudulent insurance claims.

Here is what Anthony told us about the incident:

“I just got done shopping at Kroger… I was backing out of the parking lot then put it in drive and all of a sudden some other guy decided to back his truck out his parking space… and rear-ended me. Later I found out he has been doing this to others for insurance claims.”

The BlackVue Advantage

This is where the DR900X-2CH Plus changed the game. Because Anthony had a 2-Channel system (front and rear cameras), the entire incident was recorded.

Anthony didn’t have to argue or wait for the police to determine fault. He simply pulled out his smartphone.

“…When I showed him the video from my BlackVue dashcam on the phone, he left.”

The moment the scammer realized he was being recorded—and that Anthony could instantly access the footage via the BlackVue App—the gig was up. He fled the scene immediately, knowing his scam had failed.
