Wrong-Way Collision on I-210 Captured by DR900X-2CH Plus #CaughtOnBlackVue

An Early Morning Turn Gone Tragic

In the early hours of December 29, 2024, driver Jeff K and his wife were returning home in their Ford F-150 after a quiet evening. While traveling westbound in the HOV (High-Occupancy Vehicle or carpool) lane on the I-210 freeway near Monrovia, CA, their vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver in a 2015 Chevy Camaro.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Camaro was traveling eastbound in the westbound HOV lane at approximately 130 MPH. With only a few seconds to react, Jeff attempted to steer away from the oncoming vehicle to protect his passenger. Despite his efforts, the collision occurred with significant force.

Footage That Tells the Story

The event was recorded by a BlackVue DR900X-2CH Plus dash cam installed in the F-150. The footage clearly documents the approach, impact, and immediate aftermath of the crash. Upon collision, the force was strong enough to tear out the F-150’s front suspension and send the vehicle into a 360-degree spin, ultimately coming to rest on all four wheels with flattened tires.

The dash cam’s video also made it possible to observe movement outside the truck during the spin, offering useful visual context for the event.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Jeff’s wife, who was in the passenger seat, sustained a broken coccyx but was able to exit the vehicle on her own and receive treatment from paramedics on site. Jeff, who was driving and closer to the point of impact, suffered more serious injuries, including:

  • A broken leg and arm
  • Five crushed vertebrae
  • Three broken ribs
  • A concussion

Due to the deformation of the vehicle from the impact, emergency crews used the jaws of life to extract him. He is currently in recovery and reports gradual improvement, including relearning to walk.

Tragically, the 22-year-old driver of the Camaro did not survive the collision.

Conclusion

This story underscores the importance of visibility and preparedness on the road. The BlackVue system provided clear footage that has helped document a serious incident and may support ongoing understanding and awareness of wrong-way driving risks.
This incident has reaffirmed for Jeff the value of having a reliable dash cam for both documentation and review.
Additionally, he mentioned that he was able on multiple occasions to settle undecided accidents by providing his footage to the police.
As a #CaughtOnBlackVue winner, Jeff will be receiving a brand new DR970X-2CH Plus.

“It’s a great product and I am excited to have it back in my new truck.”

We appreciate Jeff sharing his experience and wish him and his wife a full and steady recovery.
